Starting High School. Empezando el Instituto

On the 31st of January I started High School, it is a big change from Primary, as you change to a whole new school, new friends, new teachers, new uniform, harder work, and switching classes every period. An average day at my high school starts off at 8:45am when the movement bell rings and everyone goes to their first class, at 9:41 the bell rings again and you change classes. After this, just before recess, we go to a class called "Pastoral Care". This is nothing related to Religion. At this class you get your name marked off, announcements are read out, and you talk with your Pastoral Care friends and teacher, which will be the same for the rest of your High School life, but this class is only takes 15 minutes of your day and mixes up 2 students of each year. Afterwards you have periods 3 & 4 and lunch is at 12:48, it finishes at 1:28 and then you have periods 5 & 6 and the final bell that marks the end of the day rings at 3:10.

So far I've had an excellent time in high school, learning key subjects such as English, Maths, Science and History. I'm also learning French at school, and if you choose to keep doing this language throughout your elective years (10, 11, 12) you have the chance to visit France. Other subjects I take at school are Visual Arts, Music, Design and Technology (Wood, Food, Computer, Metal), Sport, Thinking Skills and PD/H/PE (Personal Development, Health and Physical Education).
On Friday we had our annual school swimming carnival, in which I swam the 50m freestyle and came fifth and also got chosen for the Durham (my school house) relay team and we got second place. The school houses are usually four, for those of you who have read Harry Potter you will know… Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. In my school the names are Durham (blue), Windsor (green), Edinburgh (yellow) and Caernavon (red).
I'm really looking forward for the next six years of high school!

El 31 de Enero comencé “High School” que corresponde en España al Instituto. Es un gran cambio llegar de Primaria pues llegas a un nuevo colegio, con nuevos amigos, nuevos profesores, nuevo uniforme, trabajo más duro y cambiando de clase para cada asignatura. Un día normal en mi colegio empieza a las 8:45 cuando suena la campana de la mañana y todo el mundo se va a su primera clase. A las 9:45 la campana vuelve a sonar y se cambia de clase. Después de esto, justo antes del recreo vamos a una clase llamada “Cuidado pastoral”. Esto no tiene nada que ver con la Religión. En esta clase pasan lista, leen noticias y puedes hablar con tus amigos y profesor de “Cuidado pastoral”, los cuales serán los mismos para el resto de tu vida en el Instituto, pero esta clase sólo dura 15 minutos y mezcla dos estudiantes de cada curso.
Después vienen el tercer y cuarto periodos y el almuerzo es a las 12:48, finaliza a las 1:28 y entonces vienen el quinto y sexto periodos. La campana que marca el final del día suena a las 3:10.
Hasta ahora me lo he pasado muy bien en el Instituto, aprendiendo asignaturas importantes como Inglés, Matemáticas, Ciencia e Historia. También estoy aprendiendo francés y si sigues eligiendo este idioma durante todos los años (hasta el año 12) te dan la oportunidad de visitar Francia. Otras asignaturas que aprendo son Artes visuales, Música, Diseño y Tecnología (Madera, Cocina, Informática, Metal), Deporte, Técnicas de estudio y una asignatura con un nombre muy largo: Desarrollo personal, Salud y Educación Física.
El viernes tuvimos nuestro festival de natación anual, en el que nadé los 50 metros a crol, llegué quinta y también me eligieron para relevos representando a Durham (mi casa del colegio) y llegamos los segundos. Las casas de los colegios son habitualmente cuatro, los que habéis leído Harry Potter sabéis…Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw y Slyterin. En mi cole los nombres son: Durham (azul), Windsor (verde), Edinburgh (amarillo) y Caernavon (rojo).
¡Estoy deseando disfrutar de estos próximos seis años en el Instituto!
